Page Titles

Status

This feature is available in the Jay Cooke (8.5) release of Deki Wiki.

Introduction

In previous versions of Deki Wiki, changing the title inside the editor would perform a move operation. This posed three problems: it was impossible to decouple the path title from the display title; it did not allow for title casing edits (changing "IPOD" to "iPod"); and executing a page move operation (and creating redirects) was confusing to end-users. Going forward, Deki Wiki decouples the display title as displayed in the editor with the path title.

Nomenclature

Display title refers to the user-displayed title; path title refers to the URL. This screenshot should help clarify:

Functionality Overview

On a new page creation, the behavior remains unchanged from previous versions of Deki Wiki - the initial title put in the editor determines the path title. For example, if we created a page "De", the path would be /De:

However, in this case, the page title may need to be localized in a specific language. In this case, we'd load the editor and change the title accordingly and save:

Notice that any place where the title is displayed, the display title is visible: (the breadcrumbs, the page title, and the nav pane)

This works as described. But what happens when I want to change the Path Title? Now if I change the page display title, the path remans unchanged and that is fine in some circumstances, but not in all. I had a coworker change the title of a page named "research" to "introduction" and wanted the URL to be related to the page title. I could not find a way to do so, except edit the page_title field in the pages table of the database. Maybe the field should be visible on the page when I edit it. BTW, I'm using the FCKeditor, but I do not think that should matter in this case.

Update: I found the answer about moving pages in the forum and makes sense once I did it. This information should have probably been spelled out a more clearly in the documentation above. edited 13:21, 13 Jun 2008

You can name a page whatever you want and that will be the Display Title. To reorder the page you would click on move (More-> Move) and you would name the page so that it will reorder.

Example:

you have pages:

A
B
C

You rename C to AA so it is now listed as:

A
B
AA

To move AA above B you would click More-> Move and change the path of the page to AA which will then list the pages as:

A
AA
B

This does not seem to work anymore. At least not for me on wiki.is

Wik.is is still running 1.9.0b. We will be upgrading Wik.is to 8.05.1 at the end of June
