MindTouch "Hayes" Release Overview

MindTouch Deki Wiki Architectural Overview Diagram

MindTouch Deki Wiki is the first OSI-approved commercially supported open source wiki. The latest upcoming release, called Deki Wiki Hayes, is a wiki AND platform for developing collaborative web applications. It’s similar to CMS web frameworks like Drupal, Mambo, Joomla and DotNetNuke, but a wiki in nature; therefore making it community-centric and significantly easier for end-users.

Featuring an award-winning user experience, Deki Wiki is already one of the most feature rich wikis in both the commercial and free open source markets. The new capabilities of the Deki Wiki platform are significant because they enable developers to more easily author collaborative applications or extend their existing applications with wiki capabilities. Moreover, Deki Wiki makes it possible for non-technical end users to create content or application mashups.

Deki Wiki is introducing a powerful new service-oriented extension model that makes it possible to create composite applications by federating applications or data across any number of computers, operating systems, and programming languages. The significance of Deki Wiki ‘Hayes’ does not end here. This release also introduces a complete application programming interface (API); making it possible for developers to add wiki capabilities to their existing applications.

Here is a tangible, real-world, example of why Deki Wiki’s platform is hugely significant:

1) An administrator registers a popular photo-sharing site like Flickr with Deki Wiki by providing a URL to the service and naming it ‘Flickr’. The administrator then decides which features to allow, say ‘slideshow’ and ‘badge’. Now a user can easily embed Flickr slideshows and badges into the wiki based on groups and tags.

2) A programmer writes a chart and graphs application in the language of their choosing and hosts it on a server. Any server that is Internet addressable will do. The programmer provides a web service for their application. A Deki Wiki administrator registers the web service in the Deki Wiki control panel, names the application and supplies a list of allowed features. An end user can now use this as if it were part of Deki Wiki even though it’s an external application running on a completely different computer.

3) A Deki Wiki administrator has content in many databases. They register these with Deki Wiki and name them, which lets end users present the contents of these databases in the wiki. Better yet, they can also use the aforementioned chart and graphs application to visualize the data in new ways.

Other new features in Deki Wiki “Hayes” include:

  • Support for multiple authentication services including OpenLDAP, Drupal, Wordpress, Joomla, and Active Directory
  • Full skinning and customization capabilities
  • Tagging, chronological tagging, tag categories
  • Commenting
  • Media gallery and image tools
  • Support for embedding rich media like videos and widgets
  • And more…

Some notable MindTouch deployments include: Microsoft, Intel, Fujitsu Consulting, SEI, British Petroleum, Quark Software, St. Bernard Software, Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University and CitiGroup, among others. MindTouch’s developer community has 700+ active “Gardeners” who have written the user manual, submitted code patches, provided bug reports, language packs and more.

Deki Wiki is free open source software (FOSS) released under the GPL v2, with libraries under LGPL v2. It is available for download at www.OpenGarden.org, the MindTouch supported developer community. Optional support packages are also available for purchase from www.MindTouch.com.

Work is ongoing on improving things. MindTouch has fixed the bug that was damaging links to tag list pages, and we should be picking up that change today or tomorrow; I’ve filed a bug with IT to get it pulled in. Somehow the footer link to the copyright page got broken again, so I’ve fixed that once again. While I was at it, I fixed the contrast on pre, tt, and code blocks, and switched to Courier New as the font for monospace text instead of Andale Mono. Turns out that on the Mac, Andale Mono

Is Orlando Sentinel using DekiWiki?
if so how are they able to change the layout of the Wiki, like showed at the picture??
Posted 09:25, 25 Jul 2007
@mads, yes Orlando Sentinel is using Deki Wiki. It is an older build (the wik.is codebase) which we custom developed a skin for. I should be throwing up some documentation soon on creating new skins soon.
